As Publisher of Sports in the Bay, Felicia D. Purcell’s goal is to break away from the redundant sports stories by featuring athletes up close and personal. Felicia saw the need to showcase players in a positive light while working as a Sports Editor for the now defunct Globe Newspapers based in Richmond. During her tenure at The Globe she interviewed many student athletes with high GPA’s and a story of resilience. Limited on the sports stories she wanted to share, Sports in the Bay was born in 2007.
Born and raised in Oakland, Felicia offers a unique perspective to her readers and is opening up the space for more women of color who aspire to be sports journalists. Sports in the Bay is a blog where Sports and Entertainment meet, and they provide videos of your favorite Bay Area sports professionals and student-athletes receiving accolades in their community.
The growth of Sports in the Bay has been primarily through social media and word of mouth, and their following is growing daily. Sports in the Bay is also growing into an outlet that enables young people to write and build the skills they need to enter the sports journalism field. Their contributions include written pieces, videos, and photos.
