United Fencers of Oakland

Fencing school that is dedicated to teaching the art of fencing to children and adults.

United Fencers of Oakland is a fencing club that has been located in the Glenview district of Oakland since 2015. Guillaume Béchaux is the Maître D’armes, which means that he has a degree to teach all methods of fencing.

He has been teaching fencing for 20 years, five of which have been in Oakland. Both group and individual classes are taught at United Fencers of Oakland. Group lessons are offered as a monthly membership that applies to both children and adults. Groups meet once a week, and a one-on-one lesson is offered once a month per student. Class information can be found here. In these classes, students are taught how to fence using the sabre method. Sabre allows fencers to score using the edge of the blade. It is a very fast-moving technique that involves slashing movements. United Fencers of Oakland is the only fencing club that teaches sabre in the East Bay.

Individual classes are available for those who need a little extra guidance, as well as those who are interested in fencing at a competitive level. All three methods of fencing are used during private lessons. Those methods are sabre, foil, and epee. Private lessons are charged by the hour, and are an amazing way to increase your skill level. For individuals who are interested in fencing competitively, Guillaume’s students do participate in tournaments. Students are usually trained competitively around the age of 12, but it depends on the student’s level of skill and dedication.

Guillaume is a patient and attentive educator. He offers after school programs at a number of public and charter schools in the East Bay. These programs give children a healthy alternative to sitting in front of a screen all afternoon. The after-school program is fun and encourages children to be active and disciplined. Parking in the neighborhood is free and relatively easy to find. There are also many AC Transit bus lines that run along MacArthur, and stop nearby.
