Trouble Coffee is a minimally-adorned coffee bar located in West Oakland’s Prescott neighborhood. The sparse layout is a metaphorical ode to owner Giulietta Carrelli’s early years, before the colors of experience altered the fresh canvas of her youth.
Originating in San Francisco, Trouble Coffee opened their Oakland shop in 2015, where they continue to serve their own brand of locally-roasted coffee. They are known for being the brains behind the artisanal toast craze that has swept over the Bay Area, as well as for their no-nonsense coffee offerings and fresh young coconuts.
Along with their famous toast, Trouble Coffee serves locally-made pastries from Starter and Salt Water bakeries. Their gluten-free baked goods are separated from the regular ones, ensuring that cross contamination is never an issue. Popular non-coffee drinks include The Boyfriend, which is a lavender Earl Grey tea latte with vanilla and honey. Visitors who are sensitive to caffeine are encouraged to order the Yoko, which is a fresh-squeezed shot of grapefruit juice. It is a refreshing way to kick-start your morning without worrying about the jitters associated with caffeinated beverages.
