The Bookmark Bookstore

Charming book store carrying used books and fundraising for Oakland's public libraries.

Established in 1992, The Bookmark Bookstore is a charming used bookstore located in Old Oakland. Run by the non-profit The Friends of Oakland Public Libraries, the book shop uses all its sale proceeds to benefit Oakland’s public libraries.

The Bookmark Bookstore hosts an ample collection of inexpensive second-hand books that are uncommon, delightful, and engaging. Their best-sellers include rare and antiquarian books, vintage collectibles, author-signed copies, first editions, and esoteric subjects. Aside from paper publications, The Bookmark also carries DVDs, CDs, and LPs. In order to ensure high quality, their dedicated team of volunteers carefully selects items from over 10,000 books donated to the book store each year.

The Bookmark’s airy, high-ceilinged storefront also doubles as a beautiful mixed-use space for events such as 1st Wednesday poetry readings. If you can’t make it to The Bookmark’s lovely Italianate-style location in the Old Oakland district, you are also welcome to shop online at their Amazon store. The Bookmark Bookstore is mostly staffed by volunteers seven days a week, so if you want to spend three hours or more per week surrounded by walls of books and book lovers, please contact The Bookmark to learn more about their volunteer program. Donating your books to the Bookmark is also a great way to support Oakland’s public libraries and help expand their library services.

The Bookmark Bookstore opens seven days a week at 721 Washington Street. Street parking is available, and the books store is only a short walk away from 12th Street and Lake Merritt BART stations.
