McGrew & Associates

Works in fair housing development, urban ecology, project development, and real estate.

McGrew & Associates is an Oakland company that works in fair housing development, urban ecology, project development, and real estate. Teron McGrew’s vision is to change the behavior of how people live in their homes. She wants people to deeply connect with their communities through owning a home. Teron wants to protect and preserve Oakland’s remaining African American community by helping people stay in their homes and by helping generate income through homeownership.

McGrew & Associates’ mission is to improve the lives of marginalized communities in Oakland by creating, designing, and engineering sustainable homeownership. They achieve this by bringing homes up to code, selecting sustainable materials for construction, creating economic opportunity for homeowners, advocating for and developing fair housing projects, creating sustainable communities through urban ecology, and working to combat climate change.

As an Oakland Native and Gen Xer, Teron is the youngest of eight siblings. Her family has played a critical role in Oakland homeownership when it was illegal for black people to purchase property. Teron’s uncle, Sam Odell, was the first African-American real estate broker. He also worked with assembly member Byron Rumford (The Fair Housing Act 1964) to develop the first ACORN projects in West Oakland. Fair housing rental and homeownership opportunities were provided through working with African-American leaders, Jewish allies, and more.

McGrew & Associates strive to expand their clients’ access to resources and capital by helping them find creative ways of financing. They also work with homeowners to add additional units to their properties to generate income. McGrew & Associates’ projects include updating old homes, adding solar and water conservation elements, and more. They also have a strong focus on building a healthy environment in their community and to expand residents’ connection to nature.

In addition to their work with clients, Teron also is a thought leader in this space. Her blog features writing about housing affordability, accessibility, and strategies for an integrative approach to expanding homeownership in marginalized communities. She also works on fair housing legislation and other community efforts. To learn more about how McGrew & Associates can support you and your homeownership goals, contact Teron and her team.
